Counseling for Addiction

When we think of addictions, it may be natural to think first of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. Addictions, however, cover a wide range of behaviors. When someone is addicted, there is compulsive seeking and using, either a substance or an activity or both. Common addictions are alcohol and legal and illegal drugs, pornography, gambling, even shopping and eating.

Views and theories of addiction have changed throughout the decades. One thing is for sure, addiction is complicated and destructive. Risk for addiction is influenced by a combination of factors that include individual biology, social environment, and age or stage of development. The more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance of addiction. And, addiction can run in families.

Addiction affects brain, body and behavior. It affects all ages, from the baby exposed to drugs in utero to children, adolescents and adults of all ages. Family members who deal with an addicted loved one feel enormous stress, fear, uncertainty and instability, anger and disappointment too. They may think they caused the problem, or they can fix it. Dealing and coping with addiction can create long-lasting personality changes and chronic relationship problems.

Addictions can be prevented. Self-control, positive relationships and support can help prevent addictions and ensure the effectiveness of treatment. That’s where counselors at Urban Balance can help, and help not only addicted individuals but their loved ones as well.

Urban Balance provides a safe and confidential place to get support, insight, guidance, information, tools, resources and skills to help prevent an addiction, break the addiction, as well as heal from the addiction. Behavioral treatments are supportive.
